ATMOSFAR on Steam Deck: Playable, With Caveats
ATMOSFAR is rated Playable on Steam Deck, not Verified. What that means, the two official warnings, control tips and settings that help the handheld build.

Steam rates ATMOSFAR Playable on Steam Deck, not Verified. The game runs, but two things need attention: text input does not automatically open the on-screen keyboard, and the main player does not support an external controller.
"Playable" is a specific Steam Deck rating, not a vague compliment. It means the game works on the handheld but has at least one issue that needs manual attention. For ATMOSFAR, Valve lists two.
What "Playable" means here
Steam Deck compatibility ratings:
- Verified: works out of the box, with controller, readable text and no manual steps.
- Playable: works, but may need manual configuration or has a caveat.
- Unsupported: does not run or is not usable.
ATMOSFAR sits in the middle. The game boots, renders and accepts input. The caveats are about text entry and controller assignment, not about a broken build.
The two official warnings
1. Text input does not open the keyboard automatically
Some actions require typing — naming a ship, a camp or a save, and any social or text field. On Steam Deck, the on-screen keyboard does not always appear when the field is focused.
Workaround: press Steam + X to bring up the keyboard manually, or use an external keyboard for setup. This is a minor annoyance, not a blocker.
2. The main player does not support an external controller
The game's main player input does not accept an external controller in the way the Deck's built-in controls do. If you dock the Deck and want to play on a TV with a gamepad, expect to use the Deck itself as the controller or to remap.
For handheld play, this warning does not matter: the built-in controls work.
How it performs
There is no official Deck performance profile, and Early Access performance changes with patches. Treat any specific frame rate claim as provisional.
What to expect from the hardware and the game's requirements:
- The minimum desktop GPU is an RTX 2070, which is well above the Deck's GPU. The Deck will not run the game at desktop-minimum quality.
- Expect low settings, 30–40 fps target, with drops in dense islands, storms and busy co-op sessions.
- The game is CPU-heavy in late-game bases and four-player sessions; the Deck's CPU is the limit, not the screen.
If you are sensitive to frame pacing, this is not the ideal way to play. If you want ATMOSFAR on a commute, it is workable.
Settings that help
- Set everything to Low, then raise textures if you have headroom.
- Cap at 30 fps for stability; uncapped framerates drain battery and cause swings.
- Reduce volumetric clouds and draw distance — the two biggest costs in a flying game.
- Enable FSR if the game exposes it; upscaling from a lower resolution is the standard Deck trick.
- Limit TDP to extend battery; ATMOSFAR is not a twitch shooter.
- Use the trackpads for building menus and the right stick for camera.
- Play plugged in for long sessions; the game is demanding.
Controls
The Deck's built-in controls are supported. Building and inventory management are the awkward parts: they were designed for mouse and keyboard, and the Deck's trackpads are the closest substitute.
- Use the right trackpad as a mouse for build mode.
- Map the back buttons to interact and build if you can.
- Increase UI scale if the game offers it; text on a 7-inch screen at desktop scale is small.
- For ship building, consider streaming to a PC or playing docked with a keyboard. Precision placement is much easier with a mouse.
Battery life
A demanding open-world game on a 40Wh battery will not last a long flight. Expect roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours at low settings with a 30 fps cap, depending on brightness and scene complexity. That is an estimate from the hardware class, not a measured benchmark.
Carry a battery pack or play near power for long sessions.
Is the Deck version worth it?
Yes if:
- you already own a Deck and want to play ATMOSFAR away from your desk,
- you are comfortable with low settings and 30 fps,
- and you mostly play solo or with a patient friend.
No if:
- you want the game to look like the screenshots,
- you play four-player co-op with a full base,
- or you expect Verified-level convenience.
The PC version is the reference experience. The Deck version is a compromise that works.

FAQ
Is ATMOSFAR Verified on Steam Deck? No. It is Playable.
Does it run at 60 fps on Deck? Not reliably. Target 30 fps at low settings.
Can I use an external controller? The main player does not support one in the standard configuration. Use the Deck's built-in controls.
Why doesn't the keyboard appear? That is one of the two official Playable caveats. Press Steam + X to open it manually.
Will it get Verified later? Possible, but not announced. Early Access performance work may improve it.
